What happens in Type 1 Diabetes?
1 in every 10 Australians has type 1 diabetes. Type 1 is usually caused when there is auto-immune destruction of insulin making cell in pancreas. Therefore, no insulin is made in the body. It commonly affects in childhood and people under 30. There is no cure for Type 1. It is managed with insulin injections, exercise and nutrition.
What happens in Type 2 Diabetes?
With Type2 Diabetes, your body either doesn’t make enough Insulin (a hormone which regulates your blood sugar level) or the Insulin it produces doesn’t work properly, because your body cells are resistant to it. Type 2 is described as lifestyle disease as it occurs in people who have less physical activity, who are obese or overweight. This is the most common form of diabetes. Research has shown that type 2 can be prevented by exercise , proper nutrition and lifestyle changes.
Did you know though your family history and ethnic background can increase your chances of developing Type 2 Diabetes, it is the lifestyle issues that are responsible developing it in number of cases. So, lifestyle changes that includes diet, exercise and weight management help the body to use Insulin more effectively.
Gestational Diabetes
It affects women during pregnancy. It usually affects 3 to 8 % of pregnant women. Women are at a risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes later in life if they had Gestational diabetes during pregnancy.Gestational diabetes should be monitored and controlled to reduce risk.
